With a focus on broadcast television, digital, radio and print, SAFA's media-focused study abroad experience is designed to bring students one step closer to leadership in media skills and literacy on a global scale. Mass media forms, from print, film, radio and broadcast television to interactive and digital platforms are shaping the course of global history as well as the daily routines of individual lives. All of these forms play a crucial role in the exchange of ideas and information through news and vary greatly across the globe. This exchange is influenced by the communication style and culture of a given society. It would be important for any future media professional to appreciate and study the relationship between their own culturally-informed communication methods and those of an increasingly global audience.
In today's society, local news stories are available for global consumption. There are many ways of presenting news, sports and other information for consumption and many ways of consuming it, and our study abroad program provides a great opportunity to learn and experience that diversity firsthand. With more than 13 international/national/regional media outlets that are based in Georgia, including CNN, Turner Broadcasting, Cox Communications, The Weather Company and others, this study abroad experience considers media forms, content, reception and production in local, national and international/global contexts of creativity, art, technology, and industry. Some of the most important skills aspiring media professionals need as they begin their careers aren't learned in a classroom. Students will take learning outside the classroom and be able to take part in a forum for the intercultural exchange of knowledge. Through participation in lectures, site visits, excursions, and tours, this student experience provides insight into the careers of multi-media journalism, broadcast journalism, and media production.
A Few of This Program's Key Topics

Expand professional experience through various types of programming.

We work with a wide variety of organizations and influencers, and handpick each specific
placement based on your experience level as captured in your application and Skype interview
with our team.
We strive not to have a typical day within the program. Every day is a little different by design.
The program contains the program components below.
Expert 1-on-1 Interaction (1 or 2 sessions included): Our 1-on-1 interactions are
designed to promote collaboration, open dialogue and the sharing of ideas which create
a more natural, comfortable and more organic experience.
Corporate Speaker Series (1 or 2 sessions included): We have designed our
corporate speaker series with industry influencers as a means of sharing their
knowledge and expertise with participants.

Whether its instruction with an elite dancer or a Q&A session with an industry icon, the benefit
is all the same. The knowledge gained during these sessions which can be adjusted to an
individual's unique passions and learning styles, are extremely valuable.
While working to make sure no interaction will be 100% scripted, our 1-on-1 interactions are
designed to promote collaboration, open dialogue and the sharing of ideas which create a more
natural, comfortable and more organic experience. Not only are participates able to present
preferred topics, but adjustments can be made in the direction of the interaction as needed to
make the experience most beneficial.
We have designed our corporate speaker series with industry influencers as a means of sharing
their knowledge and expertise. The reality is that students have their considerations and
preferences when pursuing career paths. In some cases, only after gaining first-hand exposure
can they gain the appropriate perspective. Through these influencer interactions, our goal is
for participants to adopt new ideas and preferences for their career aspirations.
Speakers interactions will vary in length, but all will include industry insight, personal
background and company overview. More importantly speakers will be focused on providing
professional advice and providing a truly interactive Q & A session as well. In some cases, we
offer sessions with multiple speakers to share information more informally.
This unique experiential learning opportunity introduces participants into actual work
environments and prospective career paths within. Typically, these experiences include a site
tour, an extensive Q&A session and a behind the scenes look of the organization with a key
staff member. The main objective of our tours is to provide a much deeper understanding and
lasting impression of an employer's brand.
Our tours are excellent early career development opportunities for those interested in
networking with employers, exploring various professions, and experiencing cross- functional
workplace roles. Along with unique perspectives into organizations, host organizations expose
participants to internal cultures and industry insight.
